I'm on Railroad Retirement; But My Social Security is More at 70.

Tier 1 Video Annuity Retirement

Can You Switch from Railroad Retirement Tier 1 to Social Security?

A common question from retired railroad employees is whether they can stop receiving their Railroad Retirement Tier 1 benefit and instead collect Social Security if it would provide a higher monthly payment.

One reader recently asked:

"I'll be turning 70 in a few months. I worked for the railroad for 14 years, and I've discovered that I'll receive more from Social Security than I'm currently getting from my Tier 1 benefit. How do I switch over to Social Security?"

The answer is straightforward, but there are a few important steps to follow.

You Must Apply for Social Security Separately

Receiving a Railroad Retirement annuity does not automatically enroll you in Social Security benefits. If you decide to claim Social Security, you must submit a separate application through the Social Security Administration.

Notify the Railroad Retirement Board

After you begin receiving Social Security benefits, it is your responsibility to notify the Railroad Retirement Board (RRB).

This step is critical. If both agencies continue paying benefits without the proper coordination, you could receive overpayments. If that happens, the Railroad Retirement Board will seek repayment of any benefits that were paid incorrectly.

To avoid potential repayment issues:

  • Apply for Social Security through the Social Security Administration.
  • Notify the Railroad Retirement Board as soon as your Social Security benefits begin.

Learn How Social Security Affects Your Railroad Retirement

The interaction between Social Security and Railroad Retirement benefits can be complex, particularly when it comes to Tier 1 benefits. Understanding how the two systems work together can help you make informed decisions and avoid unexpected payment adjustments.

If you're considering claiming Social Security, it's worth reviewing how your Railroad Retirement annuity may be affected before filing your application.
